i’ve been trying to get those words in. haha. remember that show. it was my favorite for as long as it was on. every thursday night. a young micheal douglas.

we decided to rent a car for a day to see the city. i don’t think the coach likes driving those narrow, car filled, double parked, one way streets any more than jerry. and this is what enterprize gave us, because they didn’t have the compact car jerry ordered

DSCN2949

DSCN2856

you can also rent these. gps go cars.

every trip here we like to get a shrimp cocktail at fisherman’s wharf. so we did that first. we went inside the resturant this time instead of getting it from one of the stands. i had my cocktail and jerry got his clam chowder in a sourdought bread bowl. eating inside we got our twelve dollar parking validated.

DSCN2791

DSCN3084

we had seen the coit tower but never been in it so we did that. the views are spectacular, but it was a hazy day.

DSCN3003

we had driven by the famous painted ladies, but never stopped to take pictures. we probably all remember them from full house.

this is teddies flat, as they were called, when she lived here. 1928 taylor street. the one on the left corner with the shades open. i remember how much i loved it. teddie had it decorated with antique furniture from jerolds grandma’s store. it was cooled by a central built in cylynder that had windows opening to each flat. all that cool air would come from the cool three story interior from the cool ground. (i didn’t explain that very well).

DSCN3017

the view down her street. you can see all the way to alcatraz. not in this picture though.

DSCN3020

we also went to another mission.

we turned the car in by four and went back to camp. we’ve been seeing whales, but tonight we saw a beautiful sunsset.

the 16th street steps

we started coming to san francisco when teddie and jerold lived here in the seventies. teddie hadn’t had jake yet when they first moved here. i called jake to say hi and find out how old he was. can you believe he is now 45?
jake said he’s busy at work. amanda’s cook book on fermenting is doing well. she was recently in japan on a reality tv show promoting it. you know fermenting is becoming a very healthy way to eat. saurerkraut anyone? kimchi?

so it’s been over 45 years we’ve been coming to the city by the bay. and i had never heard of these steps before. i read about them a few years ago in a sunset magazine. i cut the  the article and have saved it all this time. i do that a lot. and we finally made it here.

what a joy it is when that happens.

DSCN2833

also a joy to see something so beautiful.

DSCN2840

i guess you know that’s not me.

what an accomplishment. they are so unique. even the succulent gardens on the sides are kept gorgeous.

they are in an old neighborhood with narrow streets that jerry maneuvered through expertly. thanks jerry.  it’s a little gem in the big city.

DSCN2834

DSCN2835

and no we didn’t walk up them. there are signs posted everywhere to lock you car and take valuables with you.  it takes only 10 seconds for people for people to break in.

so we locked the car and i took the most valuable thing i have, quickly took pictures and went back to the coach.

we found some delicious smoked salmon and had it for dinner.

don’t know what we will do next – stay tuned

san francisco

okay, i hate to complain but now it’s cold. we actually used the heater a little bit. we have a nice campground in pacifica. it’s 10 miles from san franscisco. we have a great view from our site, but,  part of the cliff fell into the ocean seven years ago. they lost some spaces and had to put up fences. so our view is obstructed. but we love our spot. they have the best showers so far. except walking back from them.

DSCN2802

it was so cold. look at the wind sock behind us.

DSCN2797

DSCN2796

we decided to have lunch at the cliff house, our favorite place to eat. it’s got a long history in san francisco.

DSCN2792

DSCN2812
my eyes spotted this on the menu and had to try it. it was the best one i’ve ever had. the fish and chips were a little disappointing this time. but the popovers were great. when is the last time you had popovers?

DSCN2814

a sample of two old menus

after lunch we drove to pier 33 to check out the parking for our alcatraz tour thursday. we found 3 lots that can handle us. jerry feels better now. parking can be a big problem with the coach.

more to come

stay tuned

vacaville?

we took hwy 80 through donner summit. it’s a very pretty road. especially when it’s snowing. but it wasn’t that day. it was hot. we stopped and i took a few pictures.

it was getting time to stop for the night and the traffic was getting bad and the nearest town was vacaville. i never thought we would be in vacaville for anything, but there we were. at the midway rv park.

DSCN2754

we turned on the air conditioner and never went out after that.

it was going to be 110 degrees in vacaville monday. we were anxious to get into san fransisco for some cooler weather so we headed out. uh oh, there’s a goodwill. it wasn’t hot yet so we went in.

DSCN2803

it was my birthday this trip.

it is cooler weather now

reno

DSCN2720

i had to include a picture of the flying bus at greyhound. what would possess a company to advertise this way?

DSCN2724

bob is still in place at teds. i asked ted if jerry and i could stick our fingers in hes nose and he said “absolutely not’. then will you stick your finger in his nose? “absolutely not”.

DSCN2725

ted’s rock wasn’t a rock this year. i gave him some of the aqua tumbled glass from glass beach. do you see them?

saturday ted had errands to run and it was his scheduled haircut day. so jerry and i went to a few thrift stores by ourselves. we went to  the scpa,  thrift depot, where i got my old typewriter a few years ago, and st. vincent de paul. where this year jerry spotted a barbie doll that i didn’t even know i wanted. but as soon as i saw it i knew i did. i guess some of you don’t  know i collect them. i only collect special ones. don’t you think this one is special tracy?  she married dimitri in this dress.

DSCN2723

DSCN2756

jerry finished the book you gave him sharon. he enjoyed it and will probably like to discuss it with you.

DSCN2713

a lot of the art from burning man turn up on the streets of reno. i couldn’t get pictures of all of them. it’s so hard to park. these are on the fly.

DSCN2715

if you ever have time to spare, check out the websites of burning man. it’s amazing what people do and create out there. we saw some very elaborate vehicles too. we we’re going to see an exibit at the museum of art but never made it there.

we had a great time at ted’s. it never got really hot. and a nice cool breeze would come at night. i actually like staying in his driveway better that at the campground.

DSCN2726

bye ted, can’t wait til next time. love you.

we left this morning after coffee at homage. we didn’t draw sticks this year.

we’re on our way to san francisco to get our minds back.

stay tuned.

horatio’s ride

here are pictures i wanted to put in a post of their own.

DSCN2628

DSCN2618

sometime back jerry and i had listened to a book on tape called ‘horatio’s drive – americas first road trip’.

while driving to sisters jerry pulled over at a pullout to let faster traffic pass us, as he always does. people don’t like to drive behind a motor home. do you? i didn’t think so. any way, i looked over and saw a highway historical marker at this pullout. here was this information about the first american road race,  and here we were on that road. wow!
jerry and both loved the book and highly recommend it. it’s so interesting about how these men made a bet to see who could cross the united states either first.

i found out, looking up to remind me the title of the book, ken burns made a documentary about it too. can’t wait to rentl and watch that.

we left susanville

DSCN2693

since i love clouds, i’m always looking at them as i did as a kid and thinking what do they look like. i also remember looking for a four leaf clover too, but i don’t do that anymore.
that last cloud picture i put in a post looked like a horse to me too. this one looks like a bird. ??????

DSCN2698

i love this picture of the levels of the landscape. small hills leading into large ones.

check out this motorhome.

DSCN2702

DSCN2703

DSCN2712

we got to ted’s and talked for awhile and then went to pick up tony at his new company’s office. i got to meet his bosses. very nice men. one had been to madras and said it wasn’t anything like they were reporting in the media. what a surprise.

DSCN2705

DSCN2707

it’s been a long time since tony and ted had seen each other. we couldn’t remember when it was. too long though. we had a good visit at the buffet. lot’s of stuff to choose from, and lots of stuff to talk about. i think we all kept our heads and didn’t overeat.

tony had to go back to work to take care of something after dinner so we took ted home and tony said his good-bye.

DSCN2709

he had to unplug something and then plug it in somewhere else. it was a little more complicated than that though.

DSCN2708

all done.

we took him back to his hotel, the peppermill, and we went back to ted’s driveway where we will be spending our time this trip. because burning man is starting, all the campgrounds were full.

we went to homage for breakfast. delicious as always. we were going to take tony to the airport, so we picked him up at work, had lunch and then dropped him off at jet blue. see you soon tony. we went back to our campsite in ted’s driveway.

thank you for our family

i had to do a special post for our family. not just for following and commenting on our blog. but everything else they do for us. in some big ways and small ways. for being there and taking time to listen to us and help if need be. for remembering us in special ways. we love you guys and you mean the world to us. and like some parents, don’t tell you often enough. but we do and always will.

thanks amy for all your cute comments. i love that you are interested in the blog now. i know emily is a teenager now and has other things on her mind. i know your following it emily. i know thuy is so busy and works so hard with all her ‘kids’ to have time to comment. tony i love getting all yours at one time. you can be so funny. sharon probably didn’t like the one about the bible study group being sketchy though. she knows it was a joke.

tracy, i’m glad you take the time to comment. i like your insightful and funny ones. you got my knack for writing. ha ha. i hope you show daryl some of the good posts. there are some good ones i think he might like.  i like seeing your face on the comments too. all the people that have pictures, i love it. i wish everyone would put one on. it reminds me of home.   hannah you have a whole new spin on yours. i love it. they’re cool. i hope you show javier some of the good ones too. we love you too jessica, where are you? did you check out the dune buggy one?

cellia, you have a lot of nice things to say. i love it that you appreciate being reminded of pleasant memories. we’re making new ones while visiting old ones at the same time. thanks for following. i hope you show michelle some of the good ones.

ted, i know you are following our every move to see when we will be barging in on you. you can tell us your comments when we get there. which will be today. are you ready?

love you all,

jerry, jill, mom, dad, grandma

thank you

once again i want to thank everyone for following and commenting on our travels. it’s been fun taking you along. i wish you could be here too sharon. i remember the time we went to las vegas in the coach. that was fun. next time we can take tootsie. i remember the wash house, with it’s spiders, but not the washer. i’m sure celia remembers the spiders too. and we all remember the out house.

thanks for the news of the neighborhood kara. so sorry to hear about sascha. it was so much fun watching her follow the dogs. i worry about midas so much. linda says he’s doing fine. i wish we could get him in the house. congratulations on getting pinned.

i can’t say i want to end our trip but it will be nice to sit on the porch again. i haven’t had a long island tea since we left. (i can’t say that for beer though). we’ll be home soon jessie and dick to get one at phil trani’s. and i miss everyone.  i’m glad norm is improving. paula did a good job taking care of him. i’m anxious to see what progress rosemary has made on her yard. and to see how much remy has grown.

i hope chris and jose had a good time in las vegas.  did you all know that elizabeth was going to burning man. i’ll be anxious to hear about that. i think it’s going on next week. the nevada art museum has an exhibit on burning man we’re going to see with my brother.

can’t thank frank and linda enough for feeding midas, twice a day,  giving him treats at his command. making sure he has water. sitting on the porch with him, probably at his command also. and hannah and javier for doing all the same for zorro and keeping in touch with us.

and martha and ray, i hope you’ve had a good week in portland. i’ve missed your comments.  i want to tell you about a little detour for you to take on your way home.  the little town of dunsmuir. it’s right past weed. look it up martha. it’s the cutest little town. it’s easy off, easy on access from the 5. the one store i love is ‘unexpected treasures’. the two sisters that work there are super nice.  ray, you could go into the hardware store across the street. it has a lot of old stuff, really old stuff to look at. the ceiling is incredible.
and if your hungry, they might be b-b-qing at the thriftway market parking lot. it was the best, i tell you, it was the best ever.
please take martha there ray.  you will like it too. i promise.

we will be doing a lot of fun stuff with my brother. you won’t want to miss us pulling fortune sticks out of the can.

stay tuned

the smoke

DSCN2616

i forget where the smoke got bad. we stopped in sisters on hwy 20 and it was pretty bad there. they had evacuations the previous friday. we kept checking traffic and it said there might be delays but we hadn’t hit any yet.

DSCN2644

DSCN2633

DSCN2635

the smoke was getting worse on hwy 20. there was a lot of previous damage to the trees. it looked really eerie.

we got on hwy 97 and traffic started to back up after we passed bend. it wasn’t too bad at first and then it did get bad.

DSCN2645

jerry said we were averaging 7 miles an hour. it was time to stop anyway so we stopped in crescent. we learned the traffic wasn’t from the fires, but just from people leaving oregon after the eclipse.

DSCN2660

this was a welcoming sign. (i took this picture the next morning after most of the smoke had cleared).

the campground wasn’t the best but it had good wifi and a cat that looked like boogie. we watched him chasing bugs and birds. and it was only $15. we’ve been lucking out this trip on campgrounds.

DSCN2653

DSCN2671

the next morning we got on hwy 97 again and it was clear sailing. we had smokey the bear keeping an eye on things for us.

DSCN2676

i think these are one of the trees they use for telephone poles. they are so straight and tall

we stopped at eagle lake and stretched our legs. it is a huge lake with no recreation at all.

DSCN2677

DSCN2687

when we got back to the coach, i noticed the clouds in the windows.

we wanted to get to reno by tomorrow so we drove all day. no traffic at all. we finished our book on tape. it was a good story. jerry and i both liked it.

DSCN2669

we made it to susanville, ca. we’ll go into reno today. tony is there working for his new company this week. ted is taking us all out to the atlantis buffet tonight. that will be fun.

stay tuned
