it’s almost like mine, but reversed.

we took emily and amy shopping for halloween costumes a week ago. amy had already made hers, a blue m&m, so it was just emily looking for something. send me a picture of yours amy.
but first we went to emily’s soccer game. amy had already played her game earlier, and won!
trying to get a goal, emily had just kicked the ball, and a half time pep talk.
we had great seats to watch the action and so did pete, tony’s new dog

emily’s team was defeated, but she’s still smiling.
next we scooped up the kids and went to lunch at ‘flame broiler’ and then powell’s candy store.

“i did a lot of reminiscing about all the penny candy we bought at our grandma’s local dime store in lomita. remember that cousins? i loved walking to that store and spending our meager amounts of money with no parental supervision on whatever we wanted. (i still look for that sour apple red and yellow candy to this day). then we’d walk across lomita blvd.- to the liquor store- and get vernor’s ginger ale.
how old were we?
then it was off to party city. look at all these costumes kids have to choose from now. i remember going to the dime store and looking at 4 or 5 boxes. yes in boxes. but we usually made our own.

dotothy?
or the scarecrow from the wizard of oz?
which one do you think she chose?
i love how they have everything coronated by colors of the rainbow in that store.
on the way to grandma’s house to spend the night watching television. did our grandma have a television? i don’t think so!

on the way home we saw a beautiful sunset.

i liked this shot the best, except for the wires. the northbound side of the 405 freeway wasn’t as bad as the southbound side, thank goodness.
we had arby’s for dinner. the girls watched their grandma and grandpa’s 65 inch color tv while lounging in an adjustable king size bed – we had no tv and lounged on a twin size feather bed or couch cushions.

three generations.
thuy and her mother picked up the girls the next day. with egg rolls in hand. a fair trade. don’t ya think. ha ha.

oh yeah, jerry got an ice cream at the candy store.
until later

I think it’s so marvelous you have grandchildren living close enough to take shopping and bring home. I’m jealous! I haven’t been involved in a Halloween costume event in years- which one did she choose? You guys have so many great snugging spots for munchkins in your home. Things were so different at Grandma’s house, weren’t they!! Lack of parental supervision was one of the magical things about staying there- remember the midnight strolls down the boulevard?
I love you Martha. Always there Johnny on the spot to brighten my spirits for my efforts at composing a readable post. Thanks.
Grandma had a TV – an old black and white one. I remember watching the talent show, Yeakel’s “Rocket to Stardom” live on Sunday evenings. The acts were generally dreadful and we laughed a lot at them but I just looked it up and Duane Eddy, Lenny Bruce and Phil Spectre were some of the acts. I remember all those places you mentioned too. We really had some great times. So glad to see your Emily and Amy having great times too. I love Pete. What a cutie pie. I love scruffy dogs.
Thanks Sharon for the info on grandma ‘s TV. I sure don’ t remember it. I didn’t mention the outhouse or the wash house we had to deal with. How old were we again?
I believe you were 6 through 10 and then just Celia, you and me for one or more years after that.
Thank you so much! I love the pictures! Peet looks so cute and scruffy. The pictures of the color coordinate things looks so cool! 😁The sunset was so pretty.😍 Love that picture of Grandpa’s ice cream!
Jill, sorry my comments are so delinquent. Emily and Amy growing up so fast. They are beautiful young ladies. Emily is so tall, and so cute in her costume. I loved the pictures, especially Emily and Tony at game half time. Pete is adorable, and I’m sure he gets lots of hugs and kisses. I, too, remember fondly our trips to Grandma Shelton’s and walking to the Lomita dime store for penny candy, and we shopped there for what we thought were wonderful Mother’s Day and Christmas gifts. Do you remember “Evening in Paris” perfume? I remember the little yellow chickies at Easter. We always fought over who would get to sleep in the feather bed, so wonderfully soft and cozy when you first got in, and in the wee hours it was touching the floor. Seemed like I always got the couch cushions, which would drift apart. Ted always was in the kitchen on a cot. I remember him playing his Fats Domino 45 records at night. I remember Grandma’s black and white tv. She watched Jack La Lane every time he came on. I don’t remember any exercising going on, though. Don’t remember “Rocket to Stardom,” but we did watch “Flash Gordon” and another space show, and we would play space travelers in mimic of that show; I think it was called “Space Invaders,” but not sure now. Can you think of the name of it? Sharon will probably remember the time we had to fetch Grandma from Sunday church services, and she was sound asleep. The outhouse was cold and sometimes scary. Do you remember the peephole that worked like a camera prism? We cousins will have to reminisce on these wonderful memories some time. We were so carefree sitting on the bus bench watching cars go by and picking which one was ours. Hope I haven’t gone on too long or bored any blog followers. So much fun to remember these wonderful childhood memories. Love, Celia
I enjoyed your post, Celia- and the show was Space Cadet. I was always Tonga the alien and Teddy was Carol, the blonde star of the show.
