i forget where the smoke got bad. we stopped in sisters on hwy 20 and it was pretty bad there. they had evacuations the previous friday. we kept checking traffic and it said there might be delays but we hadn’t hit any yet.

the smoke was getting worse on hwy 20. there was a lot of previous damage to the trees. it looked really eerie.
we got on hwy 97 and traffic started to back up after we passed bend. it wasn’t too bad at first and then it did get bad.

jerry said we were averaging 7 miles an hour. it was time to stop anyway so we stopped in crescent. we learned the traffic wasn’t from the fires, but just from people leaving oregon after the eclipse.

this was a welcoming sign. (i took this picture the next morning after most of the smoke had cleared).
the campground wasn’t the best but it had good wifi and a cat that looked like boogie. we watched him chasing bugs and birds. and it was only $15. we’ve been lucking out this trip on campgrounds.

the next morning we got on hwy 97 again and it was clear sailing. we had smokey the bear keeping an eye on things for us.

i think these are one of the trees they use for telephone poles. they are so straight and tall
we stopped at eagle lake and stretched our legs. it is a huge lake with no recreation at all.

when we got back to the coach, i noticed the clouds in the windows.
we wanted to get to reno by tomorrow so we drove all day. no traffic at all. we finished our book on tape. it was a good story. jerry and i both liked it.

we made it to susanville, ca. we’ll go into reno today. tony is there working for his new company this week. ted is taking us all out to the atlantis buffet tonight. that will be fun.
stay tuned
I hate those “7 miles an hour or less” treks. I’ve been on a few of them. Sorry about the smoke but glad it cleared up. Sure is pretty scenery up there – the trees and clouds and etc.
My favorite pic was the one with the road, clouds and Smokey hanging out with the Schweethearts!
Wow, the traffic, the smoke, a hassle, a slow go. That campsite in Crescent must have been quite a relief. I’m sure it was all worth it to be a part of the solar eclipse. Last night PBS had a Nova special about the eclipse & I recorded it and saved it for you. Loved Eagle Lake, so picturesque. The scenery beautiful, even the pics with the smoke. Glad it cleared up. I know it will be great to see Ted again, and nice that Tony is up in Reno right now. Enjoy the reunion at Atlantis Buffet. Sis
We shared that slow crawl of humanity on the Oregon I-84. Just seeing your posts tonight in our motel room. RV parks didn’t think our van qualified. We saw the Two Sisters tragic aftermath too. Nice job of showing the eerie skys and then the glorious ones.
