the visitor center here is quite nice now. it’s been a long time since we’ve been in it. we watched a very interesting short film about the area. they have a lot of very detailed exibits also. we saw some very nice black and white photos, so i tried taking a couple.
we didn’t want to drive over the tioga pass at night so we stayed in lee vining again. this time we asked at a gas station if there was anywhere to park other than the campground. sure, just go up a ways to the utility road and you can park there. it turned out to be a very nice spot, right on a creek.
the next morning we did the blog at a coffe house in lee vining and then headed up the pass.
stay tuned

Loved the picture of your parking space overnight. Our 1950 Ford two-door engine caught fire on the pass and Ray’s dad poured sand on the fire- so the four of us spent 6 hours picking sand out of the intake manifold with the towelettes my mother in law and I stole from Harrah’s Casino in Reno (filled our purses!, they were a real novelty then and we had to endure Ray and his Dad laugh at us until we found out they were the only thing that caught the grains of sand ) until a tow truck happened along when it got dark and towed us for only $100- and that was 1961- there went all the rest of the motel rooms for the remainder of the trip to Yosemite and home!! There were no credit cards in those days, just the travelers checks. We were barbarians! You’re traveling in real style.
i thought i might see your comment before i shut down the computer.
what a story. we’ve had some doozies, but nothing like that. I love that the blog can bring back memories. good and bad.
Mono Lake is like no other place; glad you shared it. Have a great time in Yosemite.
